The Afghan Hound is a tall dog breed, measuring 24 to 29 inches (61 to 74 cm) in height and weighs between 45 to 60 pounds (20 to 27 kg) on average. The Afghan Hound coat may be any color.  However, white markings, particularly on the head, are regarded as undesirable traits. Many dogs of the breed have black facial markings. Some Afghan Hounds have facial hair that looks like a mustache that are called “mandarins.” Some Afghan Hounds are almost white, but particolor hounds (white with red or black) are not acceptable for show quality and may indicate impure breeding in the dogs ancestry. The long and fine-textured coat requires frequent grooming. The long topknot and the shorter-haired saddle on the back in the mature dog are distinctive within the Afghan Hound’s beautiful coat. Afghan Hound Dog Breed Origins:
The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest sight-hound dog breeds. The Afghan Hound has a thick, fine, silky coat with a ring curl at the end of its tail. The Afghan Hound is believed to have acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan. It was originally used to hunt hares and gazelles by coursing them. Its local name is Sag-e Tāzī (Persian: سگ تازی) or Tāžī Spai (Pashto: تاژي سپی). Other alternate names for this breed are Kuchi Hound, Tāzī, Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound, Shalgar Hound, Kabul Hound, Galanday Hound, or sometimes incorrectly African Hound.

The Afghan Hound has been mentioned several times on Egyptian papyrus scrolls, as well as pictured in the caves of Northern Afghanistan more than 40 centuries ago. This beautiful sight-hound was used to hunt wild game such as deer, wild boars, goats, and even wolves. The shepherds used the Afghan Hound as their watchdogs and herders since their legs made them such fast and agile runners.

Afghan Hound Dog Breed History:
The Afghan Hound was discovered by English explorers in the west around the regions of Afghanistan during the 19th century. These dogs were later sent to England in the later part of the century. Some say that there is no denying the fact that Afghan Hounds served as guard dogs and herd dogs, which are far within the capabilities of the breed as we know it. The major role of these dogs, however, was undoubtedly that of hunting. The Afghan Hound is well known even today of having an acute prey drive. The Kings of Afghanistan from years ago and rulers of today would breed a kennel of these hounds with these purposes in mind alone.

Afghan Hounds average lifespan is anywhere from 12 years and 18 years if the dog is well taken care of. In a 2004 UK Kennel Club survey, the most common causes of death were forms of cancer (31%), old age (20%), heart problems (10.5%), and urological abnormalities (5%).

Afghan Hound Dog Breed Mortality:
Major health issues that are something to monitor are allergies, and cancer. Sensitivity to anesthetics is an issue the Afghan Hound shares with the rest of the sight-hound group, as sight-hounds exhibit lower levels of body fat compared to other dog breeds. There is also a rare disease that Afghan hounds are among the few dog breeds most likely to develop called chylothorax, which is an uncommon condition that causes the thoracic ducts to leak, allowing large quantities of chyle fluid to enter the dog’s chest cavity. This condition commonly results in a lung torsion (in which the dog’s lung twists within the chest cavity, requiring emergency surgery). This is due to the Afghan Hounds’ deep “barrel”-shaped chest. This can be corrected through surgery which will prevent the chylothorax from causing hardening of the organs. Chylothorax is not always but often can be fatal if not treated properly.
