Airedale Terrier Dog Breed Origins:
The original Airedale terriers looked quite a bit different than the modern ones. They were also previously known as the Bingley or Waterside terrier, and originated in Airedale portion of the West Riding area of Yorkshire England. They came from an ancient black-and-tan style terrier (which is now extinct) and were then crossed with Otterhound to increase their swimming proficiency. Some breed enthusiasts also believe the Manchester Terrier was added in at some point. In the mid 1800′s the Bingley and Waterside were shown as distinct breed along with the Rough Coated variation. By the early 1900′s hunters along the river Aire use them for trapping and rooting out various game from the riverbanks; this is when the breed mixing began to form the modern-style Aire Terrier.

The Airedale saw large usage in World War I as a messenger dog and mail transporter. They were also employed by the Red Cross to locate wounded soldiers. There are many heroic tales of Airedales running through enemy fire with many injuries, delivering their correspondence and then sadly dying after their task was complete. Their legendary bravery lead to their large popularity. An Airedale was owned by Theodore Roosevelt, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge, helping it to be the 20th most popular registered AKC breed by the 1940s. While not as popular as during the two great wars, the Airedale remains in the top 50 of AKC breeds still. The Airedale, along with the Rottweiler and Giant Schnauzer were used to create the Black Russian Terrier Breed; with the Airedale being used for its loyalty and overall “joyful disposition”. Airedale Terrier Dog Breed Temperament:
Airedales do well with other dogs and children if they are given early and regular socialization. They are energetic and playful however, so they may be best for older children only. They are fiercely courageous, loyal and protective of their families members, though they are OK with most strangers. Their high level of intelligence allows for extensive training. Their history as hunters means you will have a hard time breaking them from chasing small animals or pets, such as squirrels or rabbits. It can be done, but it takes time and goes against their nature, so small pets are probably best around the Airedale. These are not apartment dogs; they are very active and need room to run around and have time. In addition, they will need some more extensive work/exercise that not only challenges them physically, but mentally. If given to much idle time without exercise, they can develop behavioral issues, often ignoring commands.
