American Eskimo Dog Breed Appearance:
The American Eskimo dog breed has three size variations of small, miniature, and standard. Many have likened the look of the American Eskimo to the Samoyed, a long ago developed dog breed that shares not only a similar appearance, but many personality traits. Yes, there is so much the same, but again there is also a lot that sets these two apart. The American Eskimo has either a bone white or ivory to cream colored coat. The head is a round wedge-shape, with two pyramidal ears that naturally stand at attention or should according to AKC standards of the American Eskimo dog breed.
If you are wanting to stick to showing standards, you would be advised not to consider an American Eskimo with blue eyes. The blue eye color does sometimes happen in litters, but would not be show quality. Most American Eskimo dog breeders will be careful to select mating pairs that will not produce pups with blue eyes, but it happens. Dog breeders now will still sell these puppies spayed or neutered before purchase so as to prevent the pollution of the American Eskimo dog breed bloodlines. American Eskimo Dog Breed History and Origin:
Ironically, the American Eskimo Dog, or “Eskie,” in today’s lingo, is not actually connected to the American or Alaskan Eskimo culture in any way, but is in fact a product of Germany. Spitz type dogs had long ago been established as the Germans favorite dog breed to use in cross dog breeding. The American Eskimo dog breed has shared ancestry with Spitz type dog breeds that include the Keeshund and Pomeranian. During the forming of the standards of dog breeds throughout the 19th century, it was common for dogs that did not fit these new standards to be sold only to the middle to working classes. The rich and well off would of course get the pick of the litters.
Historians have been able to salvage documentation that implies the American Eskimo dog breed was indeed brought in with the flood of German immigrants that came to the America’s at the turn of the 19th century. Many of these dogs were in the circus life and would perform entertaining balancing acts. Many puppies would be sold at these events.

The average life span of an American Eskimo can be anywhere from 11 to 16 years of age depending on the quality of care throughout its life. The American Eskimo is like many medium sized dogs that can generally jump quadruple their height, but during the first 2 years jumping up and down on furniture should be kept to a minimum. Joint problems, including hip and elbow dysplasia have been known to develop before the age of 5 in dogs that have had been played with too rough too early.
Another common problem for the American Eskimo dog breed, has to deal with blood clotting. This can and is usually related to Von Willebrand’s Disease (easy bruising, bleeding gums, lack of a protein for platelet adhesion). Progressive Retinal Atrophy and cataracts can affect the American Eskimo’s eyes. When in doubt always speak with your veterinarian. Friends always have good intentions, but when it comes to the health of your pet, stick to the experts, that is unless your neighbor is a vet!

The original name of the breed was German Spitz. The Spitz part of the name refers to the larger category of dogs that have erect ears and curled tails. During WW I, the name (German) fell out of popularity, so the breed was renamed American Spitz and then American Eskimo. (I have no idea why Eskimo….)
