Bassett Hound Dog Breed Temperament:
Bassets are known to be a vocal breed. With that said the Basset Hound will more often than not howl or bark when a fire truck passes by, if they are begging, or as a warning alert system. Another form of verbal communication, a Basset Hound trait, is a faint, murmuring whine. This whine is generally used just to get your attention. Most owners refer to this whine as “talking.” The pitch of this whine varies upon the individual Basset Hound, or the length of time the whine session has been going on. Basset Hounds do not like being left alone. Most prefer to be an extension of their owners like a third leg.

The Basset Hound dog breed is an excellent choice for a family with any size of child, or a household without any children for that matter, as long as they get to be with their human. Basset’s are known to coddle babies as if they are their own pups. Basset Hounds are at times very lazy, and could really care less if they were exercised, which is a necessity for the mental and physical health of the Basset Hound dog breed. Basset Hound Dog Breed Appearance:
The Basset Hound dog breed comes born with ability to perform and follow a trail through strenuous terrain. Even though the Basset Hound dog breed has short legs, and is heavy boned, do not make the mistake that its movements are not deliberate and is clumsy. The Basset Hound has an outward appearance of a Dachshund/Beagle and zapped with the Honey I Blew Up the Kid machine. Initially the Basset Hound was bred for Osteochondrodysplasia, known as dwarfism. In essence to achieve the size and height requirements of the breed, the process of selective breeding was put into effect to produce the end result of the Basset Hound we see today.Don’t let the Basset Hound’s short stature make you think your casserole is safe on the dining room table. The long torso of the Basset Hound comes in all too handy and gives them the ability to reach heights that appear unattainable. But the shortness of the legs does not make them adequate swimmers and should never be left unsupervised around deep bodies of water to prevent possible drowning. Bassett Hound Dog Breed Origins and History:
The Basset Hound’s history is sparse, and has holes in the years of when the first Basset Hound dog breed was established. It is thought that the friars of the French Abbey of St. Hubert were to have been the creators of a lowe set, slower moving dog similar in look to various strains of French Hounds. The friars named the Basset Hound because the word derived from the French adjective bas, has a meaning of “dwarf” or “low structure”.
The Basset Hound was originally brought to the America’s during the first President George Washington’s reign. They were a gift from the Marquis De Lafayette so that the President would have a great smelling hound to accompany him on his hunting expeditions he was so fond of.

Bassett Hound Dog Breed Mortality:
The Basset Hound, due to the general aesthetics of shape and proportion have several conditions that can develop if not prevented in early development. Long floppy ears, like that of the Basset Hound dog breed, gives very limited amounts of air to flow through and vent. Without this ventilation, the ears are a breeding ground for bacteria that can lead to serious ear infections if left untreated. Ears are not the only part of the anatomy for concern. Due to droopy eyes Basset Hounds require daily eye cleansing to prevent build up of dirt and mucus that is a common eye irritant. Exercise is needed, but should also be limited due to the Basset Hound being prone to early symptoms of arthritis, and elbow and hip dysplasia. If given just the right amount of exercise and not over fed, your Basset Hound can live up to 13 years.

Bassett Hound Dog Breed Summary:
Warner Brothers knew they had a winner when they picked the Basset Hound to be the basis of their Character Droopy. Though lazy in some areas, the Basset Hound is a thinker and a sniffer. The Basset Hound dog breed would be the first to know who stuffed their dirty laundry under the bed. It is safe to say that the Basset Hound dog breed could very well be the ideal dog breed.
