Belgian Tervuren Dog Breed Origins and History:
The roots of the Laekenois, Groenendael, Malinois and Belgian Tervuren are the same. They share many core traits and as such are sometimes classified as simple Belgian Sheepdogs or Shepherd dogs depending on the country. The Tervuren takes its name from a Belgian town of the same name. Belgian farmers had need of versatile dogs who could both herd and guard livestock, as well as help with general working tasks around the farms. It was not until the late 1800s that a true history of the breed began to be recorded. The dogs were bred from village to village to suit the needs of farmers and this was done in fairly small numbers.

As World War I came and passed and the Great Depression set in, the breed’s already small numbers began to dwindle. This continued into World War II until a select few dogs became well-known. Tervuren won several competitions throughout Europe. These Tervuren were of the long-haired “fawn” that now typifies the look of the breed. The Belgian Tervuren dog breed was granted a separate classification bu the AKC in 1959. Though they still display the traits of their working ancestors, of all the Belgian Sheepdogs, the Tervuren most lends itself to family life compared to the other variations. They are used in law enforcement, farm work and therapy work; but most often spend their days as family companions. They are excellent for agility trials, shows, and excel in obedience and any number of events.

The other thing that must be focused on is their herding nature. If they are to be non-working dogs, they was be carefully and consistently trained to not herd, chase, circle etc around people or animals. This can be a long process, so the breed is best left to experienced owners or those willing to take the time needed to get the most out of their Tervuren.
