The Boykin Spaniel comes from Watertree Swamp of South Carolina. It origins almost certainly trace back a variety of hunting dogs or “gun dogs” from the South Carolina area. The beginning of the 20th century saw a need for hunting and retrieving dogs. The need on the Camden, South Carolina area was for dog that was small enough to accompany hunters on boats, and be able to point and retrieve on land and water. The story goes that a hunter by the name of L. Whitaker Boykin received a spaniel-type hunting dog of unknown heritage from a hunting partner. This dog was found to have excellent hunting aptitude and Boykin sought to further the breed.

This original Boykin, (legend says his name was “Dumpy”) was crossed with Cocker Spaniels, American Water Spaniels, Spring Spaniels and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. 1977 saw the forming of the Boykin Spaniel Society and within five years time registration was closed to only purely registered parents, ensuring a clean blood-line. The Boykin Spaniel became UKC recognized in 1985 and AKC recognized in 2007.

The Boykin has a traditional-style spaniel head and are sometimes confused with traditional cocker spaniels, though they are larger, particularly though the body. Show-quality docks will always have docked tails. The Boykin Spaniel has ears set high with wavy hair of long length. Their coats are waterproof, handy for water retrieval and is usually curly or wavy, though smooth coats are still acceptable. The coat will be brown (chocolate or shades there of) or liver in color.
