Dachshund Breed Temperament:
Dachshunds are playful, known for their propensity for chasing small animals, birds, and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity. Many dachshunds are stubborn, making the dachshund more of a challenge to train than other breeds of dogs. Several quotes have been recorded regarding the training of the dachshund breed.  From the most famous writer E. B. White wrote:

“Being the owner of dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. Some day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the dachshund and why he can’t be trained and shouldn’t be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command. When I address Fred I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes. He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do.” Cute Puppies For Sale‘s comprehensive dog breed directory has cute Dachshund puppies for sale.

The American Kennel Club’s breed standards state that “the dachshund is clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness, persevering in above and below ground work, with all the senses well-developed. Any display of shyness is a serious fault.” The Dachshund’s body language does not give you the slightest inclination that they have any problem with their size. As is with many small hunting dogs, the Dachshund will often times challenge a dog much larger than themselves.  Over indulged dachshunds may become snappy or extremely obstinate. Proper training is a must for the Dachshund Breed.
Many dachshunds do not particularly care for unfamiliar people, and may growl or bark at them to establish that this is their house.  Again, proper training is always key to preventing these unwanted behaviors. Although the dachshund is generally an energetic dog, some types of Dachshunds would rather lounge with you on the couch instead of chasing a ball . This dog’s behavior is such that it is not the dog for everyone. Like most dog breeds, when the Dachshund becomes bored they also become destructive.  On more than one account Dachshund owners have had to replace their favorite pair of shoes.  If raised without being socialized at a young age, dachshunds can become aggressive or fearful.  If you have a rescued dachshund chances are they have pre-existing bad behaviors.  With patience and time they too can overcome these unwanted behaviors. The Dachshund will require a caring owner who understands their need for entertainment, exercise, and love. Dachshund Breed Appearance:
The typical dachshund is long-bodied with muscular short stubby legs. The Dachshund’s paws are quite large in proportion to the body and paddle-shaped, for efficient digging. It has skin that is loose enough not to tear while fitting into tight spaces. The dachshund has a deep chest to allow enough lung capacity so they have the stamina to continue the hunt. Its elongated, convex head has alert ears that hang low and a pair of friendly oval eyes. The base of the neck slopes down to a protruding chest and a tighter abdomen, and the tail follows the line of the back. The Dachshund’s nose is long with a heightened sensitive area that absorbs odors.

There are three types of Dachshund’s that are classified by their coats: short-haired (called “smooth”), long-haired and wire-haired. Dachshunds come in three sizes known as the standard, miniature, and kaninchen, which means rabbit. The standard and miniature sizes are recognized universally, although the rabbit size is not honored by clubs in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, the rabbit dachshund is recognized by all of the clubs within the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (World Canine Federation) (FCI), which contain kennel clubs from 83 countries all over the world.

A full-grown standard dachshund averages 15 lb (6.8 kg) to 28 lb (13 kg), while the miniature variety normally weighs less than 11 lb (5.0 kg).The kaninchen weighs 8 lb (3.6 kg) to 10 lb (4.5 kg). According to kennel club standards, the miniature (and kaninchen, where recognized) differs from the full-size only by size and weight, thus offspring from miniature parents must never weigh more than the miniature standard to be considered a miniature as well. While many kennel club size divisions use weight for determining a full-size dachshund from a miniature dachshund, such as the American Kennel Club, other kennel club standards determine the differences based on chest circumference.  The Germany Kennel Club goes so far as to measure chest circumference in addition to height and weight.

Origins Of The Dachshund Breed:
The name “dachshund” is of German origin and the literally meaning is “badger dog”, from Dachs (“badger”) and Hund (“dog”). The pronunciation varies widely in English: variations of the first syllable include /ˈdɑːks/, /ˈdæks/, /ˈdæʃ/, and of the second syllable /hʊnt/, /hʊnd/, /ənd/. In German it is pronounced [ˈdakshʊnt]. A common nick name for the Dachshund due to their long, narrow build, are called the hot dog dog, wiener dog or sausage dog. Although “dachshund” is a German word, in modern German they are also commonly known by the name Dackel; in the case of the formally certified hunting and tracking rank, the name Teckel is used. Dachshund Breed History:
Writers and dachshund experts have a theory that the early roots of the dachshund breed goes back to ancient Egypt, where engravings were found featuring short-legged hunting dogs closely resembling the Dachshund.  The American University in Cairo have discovered the remains of mummified dachshund-like dogs from ancient Egyptian burial urns that lends some credibility to the theory. In its modern incarnation, the dachshund was created by German breeders that mixed the genealogy of German, French, and English hounds and terriers. Dachshunds have been kept by royal courts all over Europe, including that of Queen Victoria, who was particularly fond of the breed. They were originally bred for hunting badgers thus the name Dachshund.
There are several opinions as to when dachshunds were specifically bred for their purpose of badger hunting.  The American Kennel Club states the dachshund was bred close to the 15th century, while the Dachshund Club of America states that foresters bred the dogs in the 18th or 19th century.

I love dachsunds. I had a dachsund who was a natural hunter. He moves like a cat ready to prey on small animals ( especially squirrels); When he runs, it looks like he’s gliding. He was beautiful to look at. He was very devoted and very protective over my husband and I. He passed away January, 2010 from heart complications. We miss him so much!! We called him Cujo – our son.
