Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Breed Origins:

A uniform breed type of the Bordeaux Dog did not exist before the 1920′s. The French placed an emphasis on keeping the old breeding line pure which meant that black masks (black coloring on the face) were considered an indication of crossbreeding with the English Mastiff. As one of the most important indications of purity of the breed, attention was paid to the flesh colored (pink) nose, lighter eye color (dark amber), and red mask. They were originally bred with huge disproportional heads. The Dogue de Bordeaux was at one time known to come in two varieties, Dogues and Doguins, the former, the Dogue, being a considerably larger dog than the latter. The latter, the Doguin, has withered away to nothing more than a mention in breed history books, as it is no longer in existence.

Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Breed History:
The Dogue de Bordeaux’s history is somewhat of a mystery. There are various theories which link the breed to the Bullmastiff, Tibetan Mastiff, Bulldog, and the ancient Dogues de Bordeuax of the Aquitaine region of France. One theory claims that the breed is related to the Greco Roman molossoids used for warfare. The Dogue de Bordeaux has been used as a guard dog,  and a hunting dog. They were trained to herd cattle, bait large predators, hunt boars, and protect the homes and property of their masters. The Dogue de Bordeaux was known in France as early as the fourteenth century, particularly in southern France in the region around Bordeaux.

Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Breed Mortality:
As with many large dogs, hip dysplasia is a significant problem. Dogues de Bordeaux are also susceptible to some forms of cancer. One breed-specific ailment has to do with the Dogue’s larger-than-average head, which can cause trouble for female Dogues during the birthing process. Veterinary assistance should usually be secured if you plan to breed your Dogues de Bordeaux. The breed has a fairly high litter size, but problems with birthing (and with the extremely large dogs accidentally crushing or smothering their litters) can reduce this very quickly.

Dogue de Bordeaux Dog Breed Summary:
Dogues de Bordeaux’s are loyal protectors and companions to both adults and children. The dogs have extremely large and wrinkly heads in proportion to their bodies, which is impressive considering how large and powerful the dogs’ bodies are. The Dogue’s feet and tail are both large as well, and their necks have a distinctive “wattle” that in conjunction with their droopy ears gives the Dogue a slight appearance of laziness–an appearance that’s revealed to be illusory when the Dogue is called on to protect his or her master.
