Entlebucher Mountain Dog Breed Origins:

The name Entlebucher comes from a small town and region in the Swiss canton o0f Lucerne. Known as a Sunnenhund, it is the smallest of these Swiss Mountain Dogs. The history of this type of dog has many theories, but many point to arriving with the Romans during the first century BC. The Entlebucher does not really appear as a distinct and separate breed until almost 1890. Another breed that was almost annihilated due to European Wars, there are very little records of the breed in the 1910s and 20s. There were as few as sixteen dogs of this Sennenhund type in the late 1920′s. The breed was very slowly but surely restored by Sennenhund enthusiasts, mainly Franz Schertenleib and Albert Heim. The breed began as a herding dog in the many mountainous regions of Switzerland, but today is most often seen as a simple family dog. The breed began acceptance in the AKC in 2010 and gained full recognition in January of 2011.
