Greyhound Dog Breed Origins and History:
There two theories of thought when it comes to the origins of the Greyhound. Traditionally they are said to be descended from the sloughi or saluki dogs of ancient Egpypt and Persia. Paintings and other depictions of both peoples show dogs with remarkably similar profiles to that of the Greyhound. They other theory suggested by some recent DNA testing is that the Greyhound is more likely related to herding dogs of Europe and Asia. This means that as opposed to Ancient Egyptian origins, your Greyhound puppies may suggest traits from the Celtic people of Eurasia. The Celts and the people of Scotland had dogs similar to this style and that of the deerhound as far back as the 5th and 6th centuries BC.

The Greyhound term is most likely from the Old English word ‘grighund’ where hund obviously means hound. A fun trivia fact: the Greyhound is the only dog mentioned in the Bible. The Greyhound had made it’s way to England by 1000 AD and to Spain by the 1500s. These dogs were sight-hounds, used to spot prey and give chase. As their main prey were rabbits, there speeds increased overtime in order to catch these speedy creatures. Early on, the natural beauty of the breed led it to become one of the first show dogs and by the 18th century the modern breeds forerunners were being private registered and shown throughout Europe. Their great speed and agility has led them to become racing and agility specialists, being used in both sport and show consistently. Over the last few decades, interest in life after sport for the dog has led many people to adopt them and make them part of traditional homes.

Greyhound Dog Breed Temperament:
It may surprise people to learn that Greyhound puppies are actually quite laid-back, even reserved because of the vigor with which they race, work and play. They are very smart and very devoted as well. The Greyhound will pick-up on the tone you use when communicating with them. Owners need to be calm and gentle yet authoritative with socialization and training (which are key to removing timidity and reservedness within the breed). Though built for sport, they can be quite fragile, so monitor rough play with children, otherwise they do well with kids and other dogs.
