Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed Basics:

The tallest of all dog breeds, the Irish Wolfhound is a sighthound type of domestic dog. Their easygoing demeanor doesn’t hint at their history as hunters of wolves (where the name originates, not their appearance). Due to their size small vehicles and homes are not ideal. They also need regular exercise though not much more than most medium-sized breeds. They are good with children and other pets and need to be around their family. They are easy to train and make excellent companions and family pets. Check out Cute Puppies For Sale’s detailed Dog Breed Index to locate an Irish Wolfhound Breeder near you.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed Temperament:

Irish Wolfhounds are kind, patient, intelligent and sweet-tempered. They are excellent with children and other dogs and animals. However it should be noted that they will give chase as part of their natural hunting instincts; in today’s breed this is completely non-aggressive, though may frighten people due to their size. They are not guard-dogs, but again due to their size may be deterrents. They are unconditionally loyal. AS they are quite big, they can sometimes be clumsy but and slow to mature, but they are smart and aware of their surroundings. Be firm yet gentle and show consistent leadership and they will be excellent pets for their entire lifespan. Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed Origins:

The modern Irish Wolfhound traces it origins back to the “cú”, loosely translated as wolf dog, war dog, hound or Irish hound. They were bred as hunting dogs by ancient peoples of the area and were called “Cú Faoil”. There were used to hunt wolves and large Irish elk. They were later reinvigorated in the late 1800s through some crossbreeding with the Great Dane, Deerhound, Mastiff.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed History:

The Irish Wolfhound is an extremely old breed. Suggestions exist that date this breed back as far as 7000 BC. They have been mentioned in Irish laws which predate Christianity and references have been found in Irish literature from the 5th century. They were spoken about by Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars as they were war dogs. The Romans used the breed in fighting lions and bears, they were so fierce. After the English conquest of Ireland, they became dogs of the nobility and were only used for hunting wolves and large Irish Elk. They were so good at hunting that their game disappeared from Ireland and the breed came to the brink of extinction. An Englishman by the name of Augustus Graham cross-breed the dogs with similar breeds to save them in the 1800s, resulting in today’s Irish Wolfhound.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Breed Mortality:

Unfortunately, just as with many other large dog breed, the lifespan of the Irish Wolfhound is fairly short, ranging from 5-10 years, and averaging almost 8. The leading cause of death is dilated cardiomyopathy and bone cancer. As with other large and deep-chested dogs, bloat (also known as gastric torso) is common, so pay attention to food intake, smaller portions is better. Give the dog regular opportunities to exercise and regular vet check-ups to enable you to have as much time possible with this wonderful, warm and loving dog breed.
