Jack Russell Terrier Dog Breed Temperament:
The Jack Russell Terrier dog breed is highly energetic, agile, and vocal. For Jack Russell Terrier dog breeder enthusiasts it is very important that these traits be passed on from generation to generation in order to stick to the format of what a Jack Russell Terrier was bred to do.
And what is that you might ask? From the beginnings of the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed, working terrier type dogs were to accompany their hunter owners on expeditions in search of animals that burrow beneath the ground. Once the Jack Russell Terrier finds the quarry they are to hold it until their owners can take over.
With that said the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed is not for the lazy apartment or condominium dweller. Because of the bred in prey drive the Jack Russell Terrier needs lots and LOTS of exercise to appease their energetic appetites. A bored Jack Russell Terrier will find other means to entertain themselves, often times digging up your prized tulips, re-styling your Calvin Klein dress with intricate teeth holes through out, or turning your couch cushions into golly fluff (any personal reference is purely coincidental). If you’re not up for the task of owning a Jack Russell Terrier, you might want to beef up your dog breed knowledge. Jack Russell Terrier Dog Breed Appearance:
There are many kennel clubs across the country that have a standard for the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed. While there are some variations, the AKC states that the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed should “be longer than they are tall with a coat type that may be smooth, broken or rough and may have white with tan and/or black markings with no preference for coat type or markings. Tail docking is optional.”
It is amusing to note that the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed does not get judged based upon appearance. The Jack Russell Terrier dog breed is a working class terrier dog breed therefore if they have past battle wounds or scars from hunting trips or accidents, those are not considered faults because the judges will look at the dimensions of size, and the dogs ability to carry out compound tasks. Scuffs and nicks are all part of the job of being a working Jack Russell Terrier. Jack Russell Terrier Dog Breed History and Origins:
There is not much speculation as to who, why, and when the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed came about. Going back to 1795, a soon to be fox hunting supporter was born by the name of Reverend John Russell. Throughout his lifetime Russell was affiliated with nobility and soon his desire to be a fox hunter was decided through his high ranking relationships. Russell first took the Fox Terrier dog breed, and selectively bred them with a dog that had the desired coloring to refine and create the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed.

Jack Russell Terrier Dog Breed Mortality:
The Jack Russell Terrier dog breed has an overall good bill of health. Some concerns may not be with the genes we do see, but the recessive ones that pop up throughout different bloodlines of the Jack Russell Terrier dog breed. Jack Russell Terrier dog breeders help to prevent this by not in-breeding. Instead they will actually have studs or bitches brought all the way across the country to create new bloodlines.
Signing up to own a Jack Russell Terrier will ensure that you will have a furry companion for up to 20 years, some living longer with proper care. Jack Russell Terriers during that lifespan do have the ability to develop health conditions that come with older age i.e.: Congenital Deafness, Primary Lens Luxation, Hereditary Cataracts. Even the best of Jack Russell Terrier dog breeders cannot prevent the deterioration of the senses caused by old age. It is a natural process of the life and death cycle.
Jack Russell Terrier dog breeders that do not test their breeding stock for Von Willebrand’s Disease are another matter. Von Willebrand’s Disease is the deficiency of the blood not being able to clot. Much like a human needing platelets to clot our blood. Symptoms can appear as nose bleeds, excessive bleeding or hemorrhaging from surgery , bruising on the skin, or blood in the stool. These symptoms sometimes do not appear or become a problem until after the dog becomes a year or two old. Respectable Jack Russell Terrier dog breeders should be able to provide a certificate that they performed a CERF test, proving that their dogs do not carry the hereditary VWD gene.

My Jack is named Spazz. There is no other name for her. She is 13 now and been around my kids their whole life. She is still full throttle and loves squirrels and geckos. You never know when those critters may mount an attack on the house.

Great dog and will replace with same breed when the God takes her.

Mans best friend is his dog, faithfull, loyal, loving and very playfull is the best way to describe cj my male jack.Best colour tan and white he loves attention and nuzzles up to my chin and rarely leaves my side,he regularly sleeps under coats etc left on the sofa.Regular visits to the window sill where he can nosy any goings on outside and rides in the front seat of the car with his head out of the window belays his very inquisitive nature.Beware any cats that visit the garden and is a very accomplished fly catcher, full of laughs that i think only a jack could provide and provided you have time and love to give would highly recomend the breed.
