Japanese Chin Dog Breed Temperament:
The demeanor of the Japanese Chin dog breed is much like that of a cat than a dog per say. There is an alertness that comes naturally to the Japanese Chin dog breed, as well as a heightened independent intelligence. This comes in handy at times, and not so well in others. The Japanese Chin has an exceptional nose for smells, and will find it just fascinating to investigate and find the scent.
Another similarity to that of the feline is that the Japanese Chin dog breed will use their paws to wash and wipe their face. When it comes down to their sleeping arrangements they much prefer to rest upon high surfaces such as the backs of sofas, chairs, and shelves. The Japanese Chin has another similar talent, where they can walk across a table without disturbing a single item. Many owners have to admit that they are surprised at some of the places they find their Japanese Chin.
The Japanese Chin dog breed was bred to be a companion pet, which has been well accomplished over the centuries. They are rarely unhappy to see other people, but can be a bit hesitant to just jump into the lap of a total stranger. Highly socialized Japanese Chins are more apt to approach people they don’t know than those less exposed to strangers. When it comes down to it though, the Japanese Chin dog breed is what you could call a “home body”, meaning that they would prefer familiar surroundings. The Japanese Chin dog breed is also an excellent therapy dog. Its amazing how much love this little dog can give. If you’re looking for a watch dog, you might not want to choose the Japanese Chin dog breed, for they are not well known barkers. Japanese Chin Dog Breed Appearance:
The Japanese Chin is classified in the “toy” sized group. The Japanese Chin resembles the flat faced features of the Pekingese dog breed, but is much smaller and regally refined. The Japanese Chin dog breed is never found without a vibrant and small, square dog with a bright, systematic expression. The Japanese Chin dog breed has a silky single tri-colour coat (coloring usually black, white and tan). There is heavy feathering along the arching tail with pom pom like tufts of hair along front and back legs. The chest is especially fluffy. Weekly upkeep is required as well as waterless shampooing by monthly to prevent tangles and clumps from forming. The Japanese Chin dog breed is no worker dog, which is why they would rather you pass the bon-bons than the dish rag (if they even could help that is). Japanese Chin Dog Breed History and Origin:
The Japanese Chin dog breeds native land is that of China. For many many centuries and dynasties the Japanese Chin dog breed has accompanied emperors and empresses to royal dinners and fancy balls for the simple reason as an arm ornament. During this early time of nobility, the Japanese Chin dog breed was only available if the Chinese Imperial Government were to give them as a gift to well esteemed diplomats or foreigners who contributed some great service to Japan. Of course now the Japanese Chin dog breed has been available to the public since before the 17th century, but each house bred to their own standards. That is why there are so many different body size, weight, color variations etc. of the Japanese Chin dog breed we see today.

Japanese Chin Dog Breed Mortality:
Since the Japanese Chin dog breed has a more flattened face much like that of the Bull dog breed, they also can suffer from sinus problems that may make it harder for them to breath. Other such things as over heating (or extreme cold) should be avoided. Keeping pets well hydrated and cool during particularly hot weather is MANDATORY. For the Japanese Chin dog breed it could mean the difference between life and death. Seriously. Small dog breeds are extremely fragile when it comes to temperatures.
Not only is the Japanese Chin dog breed tenuous to temperature, their bones, joints and tendons are too. You gotta think that the average Japanese Chin is under ten pounds. They have dainty feet and a dainty frame that needs to be protected. Luxating patellas (knees) can easily develop if your Japanese Chin is allowed to jump up and down from high surfaces such as couches and chairs. Now, the Japanese Chin dog breed is a skilled and agile jumper, but it is all too easy during energetic play that they land wrong and now they have a serious injury that happened as a puppy (that could have been prevented) that will continue to plague them throughout their adult lives.
The Japanese Chin dog breed may also develop minor eye problems. Some individuals of the Japanese Chin dog breed may also develop skin allergies. Regular visits and check ups with a veterinarian that is familiar with the Japanese Chin dog breed is a recommended.
It is recommended that if you have young children, to work with not only the puppy, but the children on how to properly handle a toy sized dog. They are so cute and small, but tumbles and falls are that much more impacting on them than larger more sturdier breeds. Ligament and bone fractures are common when the Japanese Chin dog breed is not handled properly. Unless you are prepared to supervise all puppy/child interactions, it is wise to wait until the child is older to have a puppy no matter if it is a toy sized dog breed or a larger more sturdier one. Education is key to prevention.

Japanese Chin Dog Breed Summary:
The Japanese Chin dog breed is one of the few in the toy classification to be an all around great dog. It is not a wonder that the Japanese Chin dog breed is one of the most popular toy sized dog breeds. i myself have a japanese chin and he is so loving and affectianate to everyone he meets he loves the company of cats but not so much other dogs though he does tolerate them. he loves to cuddle up on my bed with me at night and follow me around the house all day. he even goes to work with me sometimes at the puppy club. he is a joy in my life and has gotten me through many bad times with his playful self…. i would greatly recommend this dog as a great pet to an owner who has plenty of free time
