Australian Labradoodles often display an affinity for water and strong swimming ability from the Labrador side of their lineage. Australian Labradoodles are not able to be registered as an AKC certified breed because it is a “mixed breed”. Back during the year of 2008, the Australian Labradoodle dog breed was in the running for being chosen as Obama’s first dog. The Portuguese Water Dog won that round, but they look quite familiar in looks.

Australian Labradoodles can be taught to obey verbal or sign language commands, or both. This ties in with their enjoyment for training. Australian Labradoodle Dog Breed Origin and History:
Australian breeder Wally Conron was the dog breeder who created the Australian Labradoodle dog breed in 1988. Conron initially bred the Australian Labradoodle for those of the blind community that were allergic to fur and pet dander. One woman personally wrote to him asking for a seeing eye dog that would not provoke her husband’s allergies. Conran was going to train a standard poodle for the woman, but saliva and hair samples of the Standard Poodle breed still caused her husband to have an allergic reaction. Conron then decided to cross the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. Thus the Australian Labradoodle was produced. Saliva and hair samples of this puppy did not aggravate her husbands allergies. The puppy, named Sultan, was the first Australian Labradoodle and was featured in a charity called Guide Dogs Victoria that helps those who cannot afford a seeing eye dog.

Over the years the popularity for the breed has increased. But when Conron was interviewed just this past April he said, “I now regret creating the Australian Labradoodle because the popularity has negatively affected the demand for pedigree dog breeds, and led the way for many types of “designer” dog breeds.” The charity Guide Dogs Victoria are no longer an organization that has continued breeding the Australian Labradoodle, but other guide and companion assistance programs still do. Australian Labradoodles are extremely popular and used around the world as guide, assistance, and therapy dogs, as well as family pets.

Many Australian Labradoodles are separated by different generations i.e. F1 is a first generation that included one of the parents being a Labrador Retriever, and the other a Standard Poodle. Generally the female is the Labrador Retriever. An F2 is where both parents are Australian Labradoodles. This is done between Australian Labradoodle dog breeders because the AKC doesn’t recognize them as a breed (even though 62,000 members on the council voted for the breed to be inducted). 1. Deborah says:

Australian Labradoodles are a developed breed. After the initial breeding, depending on size, as many as 3-5 other purebred dogs were outcrossed to maintain genetic soundness, health, temperament, trainability, etc. Those dogs included English cocker spaniel, Irish water spaniel and others. There is an International Australian Labradoodle (ALAA) registry that keeps watch over DNA and outcrossing. There is also a breed standard just like AKC has for specific breeds. Reputable breeders test for a wide variety of possible genetic medical problems including but not limited to CERF, PRA, hips/elbows, cardiac, Von Wildebrand’s disease. These are multi-generational dogs. These are NOT the same dogs as American Labradoodles.
