Maltese Dog Breed Temperament:

The Maltese dog breed was designed to be a close companionable dog, that thirsts for love and affection. Despite the aging process, that is inevitable, the Maltese dog breeds lively and playful nature stays pretty much the same over the course of its lifetime. The Maltese dog breed is known at times to be somewhat snappish. Early socialization is the key to overcoming such bad manners. Supervision should always be done in order to properly train children how to handle a smaller dog. The Maltese dog breed can at times appear hyper, but distraction will keep their focus on positive behavior instead bouncing off the walls. The Maltese dog breed fares well with apartment living and has grown increasingly popular by the elderly in group homes that allow pets. Excessive barking has been a trait of the Maltese, but any unwanted behavior can be trained to be okay at certain time, not all the time.

Maltese Dog Breed Appearance:

The Maltese can come in a variety of fur that varies from sleek and straight, to curly like a poodle or a combination of both. The Maltese dog breed has a slightly rounded skull, with a finger-wide dome and black nose that is two finger-widths long. The Maltese dog breed form should have the height equaling the length. The ears are water drop shaped with long hair and very dark eyes, encased by darker skin pigmentation (formally called a “halo”), gives Maltese their expressive look. The Maltese dog breed is nicknamed for having a “winter nose” and a “summer nose” due to the fact that the nose gets increasingly darker as they get exposed to the sun. Maltese Dog Breed History and Origins:

The Maltese dog breed was thought to be a direct descendant from a Spitz type dog, and over time had been selectively bred to achieve the smaller size we see today. Historians have also found evidence that the Maltese dog breed originated in parts of Asia and is related to the Tibetan Terrier. These writings are pure speculation because the exact origin is unknown. Theories are that the dogs probably made their way to Europe with the aid of passers by. Some writers believe these proto-Maltese were used for rodent control. Visit Cute Puppies For Sale’s comprehensive Dog Breeder Directory to find cute Maltese dog breeders near you.

Around the 17th and 18th centuries some Maltese dog breeders decided to “improve” the breed, by making it even smaller. These later dogs were no bigger than a squirrel. Popularity with crossing the breed almost got out of control and nearly made the Maltese extinct.

Maltese Dog Breed Mortality:

Many Maltese can live longer than the average 12 to 14 years if given proper nutrition and veterinary exams to early detect symptoms before they progress. Many Maltese dog owners have prolonged the lives of their pets up to 18 years of life. Apart from taking care of the dog food and diseases, another important factor to keep in mind during the life relationship with your pet is to keep the living environment secure, dry and comfortable.

Maltese Dog Breed Summary:

For the future dog owner who wants a dog that will fit in their apartment, is dedicated, and above all will alert you to danger, the Maltese is your dog. Teaching your Maltese how to behave can be turned into a game that won’t make training feel like a chore. The intelligence of the Maltese is un-parallelled for a dog in the toy sized category.
