The AKC groups this breed with the Terriers, because it was developed for the similar purpose of hunting other small mammals.

The United Kennel Club got around to recognizing the Miniature Schnauzer in the year 1948 and groups it with the Terrier as well. The United Kingdom Kennel Club though will not accept the Miniature Schnauzer in the Terrier group because they say the breed never originated from true terrier bloodlines, instead grouping the Miniature Schnauzer with the Tibetan Terrier and Boston Terrier, in the Utility group.
During the earlier developing of the Miniature Schnauzer, many breeds were crossed to induce smaller size. Some breeds didn’t work out, Such as the Affenpinscher, Poodle and Miniature Pincher that tended to produce colors less desirable. These dogs were removed from breeding programs.
