Pharaoh Hound Dog Breed Appearance:
Pharoah Hounds have unique look that will turn a few heads. They are tall and slender, with a body lengeth slightly longer than their height. The neck lean and long with a slight arch to it. Their heads are similarly long with a flesh color nose and medium high set ears which are erect when alert. They have powerful jaws as well. Their coat is a short and glossy one, with texture either fine or slighly harsh. Colors come in tan and chestnut colors with white markings. Many also have white tips on their tails.

The origin of the dog is in heavily disputed, however some people believe that this is the breed depicted in Ancient Egyptian artifacts and writings as far back as 4000 B.C. People that follow this origin theory believe that the Phoenicians brought the dog across the Mediterranean and to the islands of Gozo and Malta. What is historical fact is that the breed was developed and preserved on Malta for more than 2000 years, and that they did indeed create the breed as we know it today. Pharaoh Hound Dog Breed History:
The first “modern” recording of the Pharaoh Hound or Kelb talkFenek came in the 1640s where they were given the Italian name of Cernechi. The Pharoah Hound breed made its way to the UK in the 1920s but did not catch on natively until they were re-introduced in the 1960s. The Pharaoh officialy became the dog of Malta in 1974. Coins in Malta in 1977 featured the Pharaoh Hounds on the back. The breed made it’s way to the United States int he 1970s and 80s and became AKC recognized in 1983.

Pharaoh Hounds are a rare breed and as such they have not had many inherited health issues due to mass improper breeding as many popular dog breeds have.
