Pyrenean Shepherd Dog Breed Origins:
The exact origins of the Pyrenean Shepherd dog are lost to history. Some claim it to be distantly related to Pyrenean foxes of the region and the original companion “dog-type” animal of the Cro-Magnons who often painted dogs in their caves found throughout the area of France. Medieval times share accounts of Pyreneean dogs as companions to shepherds and modern lithographs, paintings and engravings show remarkably similar dogs. The Pyr Shep as it was called made its way to North American in the early parts of the 19th century when they were shipped over with Pyrenees Mountain Sheep and other livestock. The majority that made this journey were smooth-faced blue merles, which would eventually be fore-runners of the Australian Shepherd.

Perhaps when the Pyrenean Shepherd Dog really came into it’s own was after the first World War, where the dog was used for search and rescue, guarding and as couriers as they were in the war. Today the Pyrenean Shepherd is a rare thing indeed outside of the native country of France. Their versatility, a combination of small size, intelligence and attractiveness make them highly sought after by owners looking for that type of quality in their dogs. Demand for the dog has slowly increased, and received a nice jump when a Pyrenean Shepherd won the World Agility Championships in 2003.

The smooth-faced Pyrenean Shepherd has fine short hair across its muzzle and the face and neck feature moderate, rough fur. Belly, legs and tails of the smooth-faced also have light feathering. Coloring is most often a fawn color with black mask. Shades of grey and brindles make up the bulk of the rest of the breed. Merle coloring, including blue merle and fawn merle, along with solid black coloring is possible, though more rare.

Pyrenean Shepherd Dog Breed Temperament:
Pyreneans are sheep herders, that is what they were created to do. So expect traits similar to that of larger herding dogs. The learn jobs well, this will translate over to agility and other obedience related training fairly well. When raised with children they do quite well and protect them, unknown children and strangers can create apprehensiveness. They will take cues from their owners behavior. Pyrenean Shepherds usually bond to an singular individual much more than the rest of a family or group. They follow this shepherd and seek to help him/her with everything they do. They are naturally wary and protective as is the nature of flock guardian. Improper training and lack of socialization can lead to aggressiveness or extreme shyness. Socialization should start early, a bonded owner will need to have lots of time to spend with the dog and proper exercise to get out their “work” energy. This will produce a happy and healthy pup. They respond well to training thanks to their intelligence so any issues should be able to be addressed fairly easily.
