Rat Terrier Dog Breed Origins:
The name of Rat Terrier comes from the traditional history of the ancestors of today’s dogs. These animals were bred to be quick and tough, with the emphasis on speed. These guys were exterminators of sorts, removing mice and rats, as well as hunting hare, squirrel and other small prizes. Their lineage traces back to the early 1800s and breeding with Smooth Fox and Manchester Terrier. Whippets and English whites were also used during the creation. By the late 1800s the forerunners of the Rat Terrier had made their way to the Americas, and specifically USA. The breed continued to be mixed with Whippet, and Beagles, Min Pins, Chihuahuas and Italian Greyhounds were added to foster speeds, decreased size and scent abilities.

It was during this time that president Teddy Roosevelt was a champion for the breed, furthering the lines and being photographed many times over with his rat terriers. This results in the breed being one of the most popular dogs from the 20s to the 40s. As far dogs they began to decline due to high usage of chemical pesticides in commercial farming which was heavy through the 1950s. Enthusiasts of the breed helped to preserve them and mold them into the dog we see today, which is most-often seen in households. The Rat Terrier dog breed received full recognition under the UKC and AKC in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
