Shetland Sheepdog Breed Temperament:
The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog and is intensely loyal. It is lively, intelligent, trainable, and willing to please and obey. Shelties are loving, loyal, and affectionate with their family, but are naturally aloof with strangers; for this reason Shelties must be socialized. The Shetland Sheepdog Standard from the AKC allows them to be reserved to strangers, but they should not show fear. Shelties do well with children if they are reared with them from an early age; however, their small size makes it easy for a child to accidentally injure them, so supervision is necessary. Exercise caution when considering an adult Sheltie for a family with young children; they may not be compatible.

Shetland Sheepdog Breed History and Origins:
The majority of breeds that resemble their larger counterparts have been selectively bred to achieve the smaller size. This is not the case with the Shetland Sheepdog breed. A Spitz-type dog was the original sheepdog of the Shetland Islands, said to be similar to the modern Icelandic Sheepdog. It took the cross of the Spitz along with mainland working collies brought to the islands to achieve the first versions of the Shetland Sheepdog. After being imported to England, it was then crossed with the Rough Collie, and other breeds that include the Border Collie, and King Charles Spaniel (not the cavalier). The Border Collie dog breed pushed the original Spitz-type working sheepdog of the Shetlands to extinction. The Shetland Sheepdog breed in its modern form is not used as a working dog, and is not common in the Shetland Islands.
