Shiba Inu Dog Breed Temperament:
Shiba Inus are generally independent and intelligent dogs. Shiba Inu’s are often described to be catlike for their stealth like maneuverability. People who have chosen to include the Shiba Inu in their household have to be patient and consistent when training their Shiba. A socialize Shiba Inu at a young age can will have a significantly better temperament than one who has not been taught any manners. Shiba Inu’s have a hearty prey drive and should always be on a leash, unless in a fenced backyard. Its not uncommon for a Shiba Inu to ignore their owners when a squirrel or a bunny catches their attention.

A recognizable characteristic of the Shiba Inu dog breed is the “shiba scream”. When either encouraged to or unhappy, the Shiba Inu will release this high pitched scream. There are a few different reasons why your Shiba Inu might emit this sound. One of which is that your Shiba does not like they way he or she is being handled. Another is that they might just be so happy they couldn’t hold it in anymore. The latter is likely the case when the Shiba’s owner has come home from a long day of work. Traditional Shiba Inu markings are known as “urajiro” (裏白?). “Urajiro” has a literal translation meaning of”underside white”. If the Shiba Inu’s coloring is cream, that underside white is not visible. Sheba Inu Dog Breed Origin:
Inu is the Japanese word for “dog.” The word shiba means “brushwood”, and refers to bushes whose leaves don’t fall but turn red. Historians have suggested that the Shiba Inu was named either because the dogs were used to hunt in areas with wild shrubs, or because the most common color of the Shiba Inu is a red color like the shrubs. An old Nagano dialect translates the word shiba as meaning “small”, which suggests a reference to the dog breeds small size. The full translation of the Shiba Inu name is as “Little Brushwood Dog”.

Sheba Inu Dog Breed History:
During the war with Japan in 1954, an armed service family brought with them the first Shiba Inu to the United States. Several years later, in 1979, was when the first recorded litter of Shiba Inu’s were born. The Shiba was finally recognized by the AKC in 1992. During AKC dog shows they are categorized in the Non-Sporting Group.

Being a native of Japan, the Shiba Inu dog breed was nearly made extinct during World War II due to multiple bombing raids and distemper epidemic that broke out after the war. All subsequent Shiba Inu dogs that born after that time can be traced back to the only three surviving bloodlines. These bloodlines were called the Shinshu Shiba from Nagano, the Mino Shiba from Gifu, and the San’in Shiba from Tottori and Shimane. When the study of japanese dogs was formalized in the early and mid-twentieth century, these three strains were combined into one overall breed, the Shiba Inu. The first Japanese breed standard for the Shiba, the Nippo Standard, was published in 1934. If it were not for the efforts of Nippo (nihon Ken Hozonkai) the Shiba Inu would never of been recognized as a Natural Monument of Japan through the Cultural Properties act in 1936.
