Sussex Spaniel Dog Breed Origins and History:
It will surprise some people to know that the Sussex Spaniel Dog Breed was designed not only as a companion dog, but a small game hunter in Sussex, England during the 1800s. The dogs were bred to be easily able to navigate the rough terrain and dense undergrowth of the countryside of Sussex. They primarily provided alert to the hunter after spotting the small game, hence their natural barking alert. Their low, compact build paired combined with even pacing, stamina, strength and keen sense of small allowed them to root out lowland game. In 1884 the Sussex Spaniel received admittance to the AKC. But by the 1940s the breed was nearly extinct.

The breed was saved by British dog enthusiast Joy Freer; her stock is credited as the ancestors of all modern Sussex Spaniels. “In 1947, only ten Sussex Spaniels were registered in the English Kennel Club.” The breed was declared a “Vulnerable Native Breed” by the British Kennel Club in 2004 with fewer than 300 registered per year. Though their numbers remain low, their popularity has increased thanks to a Best in Show award in the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club show (133rd) by a 10 year old dog named “Stump”, the oldest ever winner of the prize. Today the breed is most popular in the United States, even about it native country.

Sussex Spaniel Dog Breed Temperament:
The Sussex Spaniel is a very even-tempered dog. They generally prefer calm environments and though not especially outgoing they do have a goofy, playful demeanor hiding under their serious expression. When used in their old hunting capacity they are very happy to perform their tasks and will bark out alerts at regular intervals. Though they can and will hunt they will need a fair amount of training. Consistency is key in getting this independent breed to follow commands. They are most definitely excellent companion dogs. They love families, children and even get along well with cats in most instances. Despite their slow, steady movement and nature they do need regular, daily exercise, including walks. Neglecting exercise will produce a dog that gains weight rapidly and may bark continuously. They are swimmers and outdoor ready too.
