Teacup Maltese Dog Breed History and Origins:
The Teacup Maltese dog breed was thought to be a direct descendant from a Spitz type dog, and over time had been selectively bred to achieve the smaller sizes we see today. Historians have also found evidence that the Maltese dog breed originated in parts of Asia and is related to the Tibetan Terrier. These writings are pure speculation because the exact origin is unknown. Theories are that the dogs probably made their way to Europe with the aid of passers by. Some writers believe these proto-Maltese were used for rodent control.
Around the 17th and 18th centuries some Maltese dog breeders decided to “improve” the breed, by making it even smaller. These later dogs were no bigger than a squirrel. Popularity with crossing the breed almost got out of control and nearly made the Maltese dog breed extinct. Can you please advise breeders on or close to Sunshine Coast Qld and cost of these dogs. I have had 3 maltese who all lived to 13-14 years and sadly, lost the last one 3 weeks ago. Anxious to get another one. They are a lot of work but well worth it. Being asthmatic its perfect for me. Cheers

  41. Barb says:

There is no such thing as a TEACUP Maltese or Miniature Maltese they are called MALTESE AND MALTESE ONLY……

  42. Barb says:

The ORIGINAL Standard of the MALTESE eg is that they Originated on the Isle of Melita, which now known as Malta. the Breed is over 7000 BC + old…..and the original weight was 4 to 6 pounds…..the weight was taken out of the Standard and now has the Height…which the Maltese can now grow up to 10inches at Shoulder………The Maltese was a pure Breed that had never been crossed many years ago……
But now people use them to make money by crossing with other Breeds……. and forming new breeds……(Very Sad) But when you do this you can be doubling up on very bad faults and can cost thousands of Dollars for a new owner with a Vet……So do your Homework through you Pedigreed National Body, for Breeders and Showdogs. before you buy from Crossbred Breeders ,Pet Shops or Puppy Farmers…..and don’t pay big money for Mongrels (crossbreds.) My experience is 57 yrs of Showing and Breeding the Pure Bred Maltese…….and I like to help the Novice……..
