Vizsla Dog Breed Temperament:
The Vizsla dog breed has unfathomable energy, a gentle-mannered demeanor, and is extremely affectionate with their families and owners. The Vizsla dog breed can quickly form a close bond with their owners, often times picking out one specific person to attach themselves to more so than another. This can give them a reputation of being a “velcro” dogs by virtue of their loyalty and passion.
The Vizsla dog breed is primarily quiet, only barking to alert you of visitors or danger. Depending on the individual Vizsla, when they feel lonely or want something (potty break, food) they will make a whining sound that comes off as crying. A more drastic step that the Vizsla dog breed will reach are destructive behaviors when they are not given enough attention or exercise. Depressed or isolated Vizsla’s may develop compulsive behaviors i.e. persistent licking, whining, or refusal to eat. Vizsla’s that are in rescue tend to have these behaviors but have high rates of rehabilitation. Vizsla Dog Breed Appearance:
To prospective owners of the Vizsla dog breed, the physical characteristics can often be mistaken for traits of the Redbone Coonhound, Weimaraners and Rhodesian Ridgeback to name a few. This can be associated through the body structure of the Vizsla dog breed, which is normally lean with well defined facial muscle structure. The nose of a purebred Vizsla will always have a reddish tone similar to the coat color. Any other tint will imply not true breeding lines of the Vizsla dog breed. Eyes and inner ears should also be a light burnt red coloring.

Vizsla Dog Breed History and Origin:
The Vizsla dog breed has two main theories as to how the dog breed came about. The first, and most prevalent theory goes back to Hungary, where the Vizsla is known to originate from. The Carpathian Basin was home to the Magyar tribe during the 8th century. This tribe bred hunting dogs that are said to be the ancestral bloodlines of the newfangled Vizsla we see today. Primal stone etchings have been found to give merit to this theory. The other concept is that through selective cross breeding of Weimaraners and pointers the Vizsla dog breed was achieved. Modern DNA testing has shed light to that idea, but cannot confirm since many records have been destroyed. Vizsla Dog Breed Mortality:
The Vizsla dog breed can be expected to live an enduring life up to 15 years. Adequate living and food conditions can substantially affect the life span of your pet. The Vizsla dog breed is considered rather rugged, but limited breeding stock has increased the risk of inherited defects and ailments. These can include: Hip Dysplasia (not overly common, but has occurred enough to mention), Canine Epilepsy, and skin allergies. Most Vizsla’s will require routine veterinary care in order to catch these problems early to have a better prognosis.

Vizsla Dog Breed Summary:
Many kids of today have grown up watching the cartoon “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” It might come as a surprise for some to find out that Clifford was in fact a giant Vizsla. Cartoon characters have long since been based upon real life pets and animals. If you are looking for a pet that will protect and be a loving, caring companion, then the Vizsla dog breed is worth any time invested. I have a pup who just turned 1. When I bought him they said he was a chocolate lab, but everyone kept asking me if he was a vizsla. I didnt even know what a vizsla was until I looked it up recently on the internet and I have to say he does look alot more like a vizsla then a chocolate lab. Are there any characteristics that stand out alot?
