West Highland Terrier Dog Breed Temperament:
With being a terrier, the Westie holds true to the name. Westie’s should not be allowed to be off leash, unless the enclosure is secure. It is near impossible to stop a Westie when they see, hear, or smell anything resembling a small rodent, or animal. Westie’s are known to be vivacious in their pursuits, and will take chase faster than a drop of a hat. Leash training is very important, and needs to be started as young as possible. Training can start as soon as 2 1/2 months. Westie’s will tend to bicker more with the same sex than the opposite. Westie’s do have, like most households with more than one dog, a hierarchy. The pecking order so to speak. Overall when it comes to their humans, the West Highland White Terrier dog breed wants to be a part of everything. Westie’s are very family oriented, and will be fairly protective of their “packs.” The pack not only includes people, but will also extend to cats. Stranger cats need to beware of entering their territory though. Westie’s do not bestow hospitality towards other cats, and sometimes other dogs. Early training will teach your dog to be tolerant of other dogs, and learn when its okay to be protective. Dogs are just like people in the sense that they need to be taught whats good and bad behaviors. Digging is one of the hardest to break, and is a favorite past time for a bored Westie. West Highland Terrier Dog Breed Appearance:
The Westie is known foremost for their soft, smooth, white coat. This is the only acceptable color that the Westie can appear in for show. One of the hardest things is to keep the white hair clean, and requires daily/weekly upkeep. Even though the West Highland White Terrier dog breed doesn’t shed very much, they do go through a heavy molt if they are an individual with the dual coat. Some Westie’s are only born with the soft wavy layer. Those individuals do not shed, and require a complete stripping or clip every 3-6 months unless you’re showing your dog. Then it is an all day grooming affair.

West Highland White Terrier Dog Breed History and Origins:
Scotland has been influential in the development of the West Highland White Terrier. It is said that Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm first named the breed Poltalloch Terrier around the 1870′s. These earlier dogs were not always the pure white color, but often very similar shades to their quarry, the fox, appearing in muddy browns, reds, and tans. The push to create an all white terrier, was that Colonel Malcom’s prized dog was mistaken for a fox, and shot on the spot. It is believed that the Westie was bred by selectively breeding the pure white puppies in litters of Cairn Terriers. Not much is factually documented about the Westie, until the popularity of terrier type breeds spread. West Highland White Terrier Dog Breed Mortality:
With the majority of Westie’s being healthy, there are some things to watch out for. It is unfair to the puppies that are purposely bred without the thought if they will be born with defects. True West Highland White Terrier dog breeders will have their potential sires and dams tested for dominant and recessive genes that can pass to their offspring. Testing can be expensive, but will prevent the unneeded euthanasia of underdeveloped puppies.
The most common ailments and diseases that Westie’s have been diagnosed with are: Addison’s Disease (a destructive disease marked by extreme weakness, loss of weight, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal disturbances, and brownish pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes , Copper Toxicosis (a serious liver disease), cataracts, degenerative brain disease, and joint problems. If you choose to buy a puppy from a back yard breeder, be prepared with the possibility you might not have the healthiest puppy, and vet bills could be in the future. These dogs still deserve to be loved, but may cost more to keep them in good health.

West Highland Terrier Dog Breed Summary:
There are many things to take into account before taking the plunge to get a puppy. West Highland White Terriers are great with children, and absolutely adore people. If you know you have the financial means to support a dog, as well as a stable place to live that allows pets, the choice is yours to find the right cute puppy for sale that fits you.
