Yorkshire Terrier Dog Breed Temperament:
Size is not an obstacle the Yorkshire Terrier has to overcome. In fact, you would think they were as big as a Great Dane with how alert they are to unknown sounds and people. They are very eager for adventure, and at times that can get them into mischief. This little dog is highly spirited, confident, loyal and keen. Those who wish to be new owners to a Yorkshire Terrier need to keep in mind there are different ways of training when it comes to taking care of a small dog compared to a larger one. Humans need to be the pack leader to the Yorkie, or they can become suspicious of strangers, and aggressive to strange dogs or small animals. The Yorkie can also develop a constant “yappy” bark that is a trademark for the Yorkshire Terrier dog breed.
Yorkies require constant human attention will appear to seem dependent or express separation anxiety. This in turn may also lead to jealous behaviors, snapping if surprised, frightened or from a loud noise. Reward training is the best way to train the Yorkshire Terrier and achieve the desired result of having a dog with manners and is a pleasure to be around. Teaching of tricks also keeps the interest of the Yorkie due to the breeds desire for learning and small animated objects.
They are terrific at protecting the house, yard and other possessions, and will not hold back at letting their owners know there’s something amiss. Size does not matter. Sometimes its that quick alert that saves the day. It took a decade for a Yorkie named Smoky, a famous war dog from World War II to prove the breed still had what it took to win its way into our hearts again.
The Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire (and the adjoining Lancashire). Its a rough patch of terrain along a region in northern England. Scottish immigrants came to England in search of work and along with them they brought several different kinds of small terriers. Breeding of the Yorkshire terrier was said to be principally realized by the people mostly citizens who worked as factory workers in cotton and woolen mills.
